POWERCHINA Strengthens Energy Cooperation with Zambia
BEIJING, Sept. 5, 2024 – On September 4, 2024, the Zambia Energy Building Forum took place in Beijing, hosted by the Ministry of Energy of Zambia and the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, in collaboration with Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA). The forum, held alongside the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, aimed to enhance energy cooperation and explore sustainable electricity development in Zambia.
POWERCHINA has been instrumental in the development of energy infrastructure in Zambia for the past 25 years. The company has completed nearly 50 significant projects, including power stations with a total installed capacity of over 1,500 megawatts and transmission and distribution lines spanning more than 1,100 kilometers. Through its projects, POWERCHINA has contributed to local capacity building, promoted cultural exchanges between China and Zambia, and stimulated economic development in the region.
Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema highlighted the fruitful cooperation between China and Zambia over the past six decades, particularly in the face of challenges such as climate change and the growing demand for clean energy. He expressed hope for continued collaboration with POWERCHINA in energy, infrastructure, and other sectors to support Zambia’s sustainable development.
Power cooperation is a cornerstone of China-Zambia relations, benefiting both economies and improving livelihoods. POWERCHINA, leveraging its expertise across the entire energy supply chain, is working closely with Zambia on national power planning, major hydroelectric projects, and comprehensive water resource management. The company remains committed to supporting key infrastructure projects that contribute to Zambia’s sustainable growth.
In addition to its energy projects, POWERCHINA has also engaged in local initiatives focusing on education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and disaster relief, strengthening ties with the Zambian community.
Chairman Ding Yanzhang expressed confidence in the forum’s potential to expand cooperation beyond energy and emphasized the importance of sustainable development in China-Africa cooperation for the next decade.
Looking ahead, POWERCHINA is dedicated to deepening its partnership with Zambia in power system planning, renewable energy development, and infrastructure construction, aligning with Zambia’s industrialization and modernization goals.
