Title: Campus Chilled Water System Upgrade: Enhancing Resiliency for Future Operations
Since the unplanned outage that occurred to the campus chilled water system this summer, significant progress has been made in Harrison Square to improve the resiliency and overall operation of the system. This includes the replacement of old pipes, installation of valves, and adding new tie-ins for specific campus areas and buildings. The upcoming planned outage scheduled from Dec. 14 to Dec. 30 will allow for the activation of newly installed pipes and the installation of shut-off valves. This outage period has been strategically planned to take advantage of expected lower outdoor air temperatures and lower occupancy in campus buildings.
“We appreciate the understanding and support from the campus community during this planned outage as we continue the work to improve our systems and build resiliency for the future,” stated Greg Spiro, executive director for Infrastructure.
The chilled water distribution system plays a crucial role in providing cool air to campus buildings, ensuring appropriate indoor temperatures for data centers, research labs, and the campus community to study, research, and work comfortably. This system upgrade is essential for the successful operation of various facilities on campus.
A similar planned outage took place last December, and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will once again monitor the project and provide updates as needed. Each building’s Continuity of Operations Plan, which outlines procedures in case of issues, will be on file with OEM to ensure a coordinated response.
Building managers have been provided with a list of buildings and a color-coded map outlining the outage plan. Discussions and preparations with campus stakeholders have been ongoing since October to ensure a smooth transition during the outage period.
– Buildings in red: Outage planned from Dec. 14 to 30. (Outage to begin after Commencement.)
– Buildings in blue: Not affected.
– Buildings in purple: Temporary chillers.

In conclusion, the campus chilled water system upgrade is a critical step in enhancing resiliency for future operations. The planned outage period has been carefully scheduled to minimize disruptions and take advantage of favorable conditions. By working together and staying informed, we can ensure a successful completion of this essential project. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
