Class of 2024: Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

The University of Georgia’s Class of 2024 has completed their academic journey, taking with them valuable lessons learned both in and out of the classroom. Graduation is a time for reflection and celebration, as students prepare to step into the next chapter of their lives.

Keynote Speaker Lisa Godbey Wood Reflects on UGA Experience

During the fall 2024 undergraduate Commencement ceremony, U.S. District Court judge Lisa Godbey Wood, a proud Double Dawg, shared her insights with the graduating class. Wood praised the Class of 2024 for their academic excellence and service-oriented mindset, emphasizing the importance of cherishing their accomplishments and looking towards the future.

One of the most crucial lessons Wood imparted on the graduates was the significance of holding onto what matters most to them. She encouraged them not to settle for anything less than their true passions, reminding them that they have the power to shape their own destinies.

In addition to finding their authentic passions, Wood emphasized the value of preparation. Drawing from her experience climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, she highlighted how being prepared can help individuals overcome challenges and achieve their goals. As the Class of 2024 embarks on their next journey, Wood urged them to honor their Bulldog pedigree and stay true to themselves.

Student Speaker Hunter Fankhauser Shares Lessons from the Court

Accounting graduate Hunter Fankhauser, who served as the student speaker at the undergraduate ceremony, drew parallels between life lessons and basketball fundamentals. He encouraged the graduates to take the first step towards their goals, emphasizing the importance of movement and progress. Fankhauser also highlighted the value of teamwork and shared success, reminding the Class of 2024 that life is better when experienced together.

Lastly, Fankhauser discussed the importance of resilience and bouncing back from setbacks. Just as in basketball, life presents challenges that require individuals to rebound and continue moving forward. With these lessons in mind, Fankhauser encouraged his fellow graduates to approach their future with confidence and determination.

Professor John Maltese’s Insights on Life and Learning

At the graduate Commencement ceremony, Professor John Maltese shared two valuable lessons he learned from his father. The first lesson focused on the importance of curiosity and observation, encouraging graduates to seek out valuable experiences and knowledge. Maltese emphasized that true richness comes from learning and growth, rather than material possessions.

The second lesson Maltese shared was the value of taking risks and overcoming fear. He encouraged the graduates to embrace challenges and failures as opportunities for growth, emphasizing the importance of resilience and perseverance. As the Class of 2024 moves forward, Maltese reminded them to pursue their passions, reflect on their experiences, and find inspiration in music.

Celebrating the Class of 2024’s Achievements

A total of 3,187 students, including 1,773 undergraduates and 1,414 graduate students, met the requirements to walk in the fall Commencement ceremonies at the University of Georgia. Among the graduates were 296 doctoral candidates and 1,118 recipients of master’s or specialist degrees. UGA President Jere W. Morehead conferred their degrees, recognizing their hard work and accomplishments.

The ceremony also honored 26 First Honor Graduates for maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout their academic journey. Additionally, posthumous degrees were conferred on two students, honoring their dedication and commitment to their studies.

As the Class of 2024 prepares to embark on their next chapter, President Morehead urged them to live fulfilling lives and create opportunities for others to succeed.
